Fifteen years ago today, I was on the top of a mountain. Literally.
This mountain. In fact, this very spot:
Those two little people weren’t there, but that day was the first step towards the family you see.
Fifteen years ago today, I said “I do” to my best friend and the love of my life — and it was the best decision I ever made.
If you asked us a year ago what we’d be doing today, I’m sure we would’ve mentioned something big to celebrate this milestone anniversary. Two years ago, we marked our 13th by spending the day together, just the two of us, at one of our favorite local amusement parks. Last year, we had reservations for a romantic dinner at a nice restaurant, but we had to cancel when Sapphire came down with a fever. We never did reschedule.
Today, Jim is spending the day in end-of-year school meetings and I am up to my elbows in packing boxes, but the day is just as big all the same. I didn’t get married for big parties, fancy dinners, or lavish presents. I got married to spend forever with my honey, my greatest supporter, my best friend. And that’s exactly what I got. I feel so blessed to have these three in my life:
[It is sad that I had to go back to last summer to find a picture of all three of them together. I’ll have to remedy that very soon.]
Last night just before dinner, the girls heard Jim mention our anniversary and they said they had to give us a present. Of course, we told them that wasn’t necessary. They are present enough, but they insisted they wanted to. We wondered how they were going to pull that off. Emerald just gave us a knowing smile.
Later in the evening, they asked us to gather in the same room for a surprise. And this is what they proudly presented us with. The. Best. Gift. Ever:
I love the pictures (Sapphire on the left, and three-year-old Emerald in her first dance recital on the right). I love the heart. I love the sweetness of the message. But most of all, I love the “2 biggest fans” part. Their love brings happy tears to my eyes.
This lovely, fantastic, amazing family we have built is embarking on an exciting new adventure next week (next week!) and as I sit here looking at the pictures above and thinking of all that is to come, I give thanks for that day 15 years ago. I’d do it all over again in a New York minute.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, MY BELOVED JIM!! And here’s to many, many more!!! I love you most most x infinity + 1.*
*This is a little game we started years ago. It starts with one of us saying, “I love you.” The other replies, “I love you more.” Then comes “most”, “most most”, “most most x infinity”, and the trump card is, “most most x infinity + 1”. Yes, we really are geeks, but we like it that way. 🙂
Happy June 7th, Everyone!
